The dilemma

The clerk calls it a registration form. Question 27 asks if you will serve in the U.S. Army in combat, wherever you are sent. Question 28 asks you to swear total loyalty to the United States and give up any loyalty to the Japanese emperor, a man you have never met in a country you have never seen. The block leaders are telling everyone to answer yes to both, to prove the camp is loyal. A man moves from table to table, writing down who answers what. People whisper that the office will use his list to decide who gets sent away first.

Your options

  1. Answer yes to both. A clean form is the only door out of here for your family, so you take it.
  2. Answer no to both. You will not swear love to the country that put your family behind this fence.
  3. Write nothing yet. Find your father first, because this answer belongs to the whole family.

The Loyalty Questionnaire

Swear total loyalty to the country that caged you, or refuse and watch your own people brand you a traitor. The pencil is already in your hand.
