The dilemma

The audition finished an hour ago. Both takes are on the panel's recorder, the way they are every year, and your score sheet sits in front of you, unsigned, due with the panel in the morning. One thing keeps bothering you: Sofia has skipped the last three warmups, staring at her phone while the others tune around her.

Your options

  1. Score it the way you would score two strangers. Same bar for the director's daughter, no exceptions.
  2. Leave Sofia in the chair. She is fifteen, this is her last season, and you will not take that from her over one bad night.
  3. Don't sign tonight. Ask for both takes replayed behind a screen, no names, and rank whoever sounds better.

The First Chair

The best violin in the room is not the director's daughter. Saying so costs you your teaching job. Do you say it?
