The dilemma

It is a February late shift and the men are out on the landing, the wing quiet enough to hear the heating. The application asks for a move to D wing, and the box underneath it wants two lines from an officer who has seen him on the landing. You have watched him for a week: polite, careful, always with his back to a wall, and he has stopped going down to the servery. The pen is already in your hand when he passes the office door on his way up and says goodnight to you like anybody else.

Your options

1. Write the two lines exactly as you would for any other man.
2. Tell the duty governor you know him before you write anything.
3. Go and ask him why he wants the move.
