The dilemma

It is 3 a.m. and the checkpoint is the last lit thing on the road. An RCMP officer waves the trucks through one by one, her radio crackling with crews working the fire somewhere in the dark. She tells you the order is mandatory: once you pass, the road closes behind you. Behind you, the shelter animals and Dale's dogs have maybe a day. She raises a hand at your window and waits. Behind her, another truck is already rolling up.

Your options

  1. Turn your truck around and go back for them.
  2. Follow the convoy out and keep driving.
  3. Ask the officer for ten minutes to set them loose.

The Ones Left Behind

Everyone ran from the fire. The animals could not. Do you leave them, or stay behind alone and risk the flames?
