The dilemma

The dinner is winding down when the general says it plainly, almost bored: the real point of the bomb was always to hold down the Soviet Union after the war. The Soviets are your ally. You are at war with Germany, and Germany is why you came. Across the table, a senior colleague does not even look up from his glass, as if this is old news to everyone but you. What do you do?

Your options

  1. Say nothing tonight. Start watching how this project really makes its choices, and who already knew, before you decide anything.
  2. Catch him alone after dinner. If the bomb is aimed at an ally, you need to hear him admit it in plain words, not tell yourself you misheard.
  3. Go back to your bench in the morning. The targets are picked far above you. Your part is the physics, and that is the part you can answer for.

Never Meant For Hitler

You crossed an ocean to beat Hitler to the bomb. Tonight you heard the general say it was never meant for Hitler at all.
