The dilemma

You are in the waiting room when your friend comes out clutching the consent form, half blind with tears, saying the surgeon is ready and they just need to sign. They have no idea what their mother told you on that quiet afternoon a year ago. You could let them sign and carry her words to your grave, or you could say the thing only you heard. What do you do?

Your options

  1. Tell your friend the truth. Say their mother told you she never wanted this, and hold to it even though it stops the surgery and staying quiet would cost you nothing.
  2. Say nothing. Your friend is breaking apart and the surgery saves her, so let them have their mother.
  3. Say nothing. One thing she said once, against a whole life and a child who keeps their mother, is not a real contest.

The One Who Knows

Only you know she asked to be let go. Stay silent, and your friend saves her.
