Every honest word would lift you and sink them, days before the promotion is decided. The director is waiting, and so is your rival, across the table.

1. Play it down and move the meeting on; taking a bow over someone's slip is not who you want to be.
2. Say you would rather check the details before claiming anything, and follow up after.
3. Say you caught and fixed the problem yourself. You did the work, and the promotion is on the line.
