You hear the news on your drive to work. Both airmen are alive. Every channel is leading with it. The anchors sound genuinely relieved. Your first reaction, before you have heard a single number:

1. Pride. Your country went and got its people. That is what you want a country to do.
2. Relief mixed with unease. You are glad they are safe. You are already thinking: how many people, how many aircraft, how much did this cost?
3. You scroll past. A war you did not start, halfway around the world. You switch to something else.
